“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;” – Bob Marley
I was scrolling through my Whatsapp statuses the other day and saw my cousin had up an interesting picture. It was of this African man with chains wrapped around his head. He was removing the padlocked which was attached to the chain seemingly holding it firmly in place. This got me to thinking; Slavery is really mental. Only until we change our thinking by renewing our minds, as the word of God teaches, can we be truly free. ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2
Some interestingly fascinating facts:
“Slavery was abolished on 1 August 1834 but only children under the age of six were freed immediately under the terms of the 1833 Emancipation Act. Slaves in the Bahamas and Antigua were also freed at this point. All other former slaves were bound, as apprentices, to their former masters for periods up to a further six years. Laws were passed in the Bahamas and Antigua to abolish the apprenticeship clause, with political and public pressure forcing the other colonies to follow suit on 1 August 1838. For this reason 1838 is often considered to be the date that slavery was abolished in the Caribbean.” (The National Archives UK)
What I also found interesting while doing this quick research was that slavery was abolished in countries at different times. Even within the Caribbean we celebrate Emancipation day on different days. Some countries like Barbados, Jamaica and Guyana: 1stAugust; Bahamas, Antigua, Martinique: 1stMonday in August while Bermuda celebrates theirs on the Thursday before the 1stMonday in August. I included this to show you that even though we all were liberated, not everyone is celebrating their victory at the same time. While this is the case some are still held captive; slaves to a mentality that we are lesser than what God created us to be.
Today slavery has no color shape or form. We are all slaves to something. Romans 6: 22 (NIV) puts it perfectly: “But now being made free from sin, and become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. Let us therefore be sold out for God! Freedom in God is available now! Receive it! Be blessed!
