Proverbs 4:7 says “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” I certainly agree with this proverb. Being an obedient servant of the word I used wisdom and came up with another principal thing; LOVE! Yes Love is the principal thing!
I believe that love is not a mere feeling. Love is a verb. Love is action. For God so LOVED the world He “GAVE” his only begotten son. Action!
In Mark 12: 31 God commanded us to “LOVE our neighbours as you LOVE ourselves.” The only other command greater is to LOVE God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Therefore tell me this; (being in your right mind) what harmful thing would you knowingly do to yourself? Anything? Anyone? I guess not. If we profess Christianity or at least have some reverence for the word of God, why then do we hurt our neighbours liberally?
8 times in the bible we are told to love our neighbors. But who is our neighbor?
“A story is told of a middle aged man walking through shanty town at night when he was approached by 2 guys who subsequently physically abused him. They stole his wallet and left him bleeding by the roadside. The pastor of the church at the corner drove up in his 2016 Mercedes, noticed the injured man quickly continued along his way. The number town vagrant came up, saw the man there and hurriedly stole his shoes and socks and ran off into the bushes.
Subsequently a Haitian immigrant rode by the scene. When he noticed the ailing man, he rushed over, bandaged his wounds and placed him on his bicycle and took him to the nearest hospital.”
Now which of these would you consider a neighbor? Think about it. Was it the Pastor, the vagrant or was it the Haitian? I’m sure you would say the Haitian. In reality ALL 3 ARE YOUR NEIGHBORS. However in context the Haitian was the one to extend mercy to the man and would be deemed the true neighbor. Not because someone doesn’t treat you the way you should makes them less our neighbor. We are still commanded to love everyone and treat them indiscriminately.
Jesus then instructed to go and do likewise. (Luke 10)
What if we did this? How different would the world be? Each one being the neighbor to the other. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:35)
What I’m saying is that if we start acting in accordance to His word and LOVE then all the bickering, back biting, slander, gossip, hatred, jealousy, all of these will be put away. They will be replaced with the fruits of the spirit, (love, joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control) gratefulness, charity, selflessness, forgiveness and the list of good character can continue. No, I’m not saying that we will not have varying ideas, disagreements and misunderstandings, but the manner in which we deal with these incidences will be most appropriate.
Now we know these things. It’s head knowledge. So why is it we struggle to act it out?
- Fear – of being taken advantage of
- Past experiences
- Not willing to submit to God’s commands
- I’m sure you can come up with some more
Each of these can be overcome by one thing; Getting to know God. When we have a true encounter with God’s LOVE, we become changed forever. No one knows us better than ourselves and God. For Him to love us, oh wretched man that we are...that must be some kinda love! AGAPE love it’s called. No conditions attached. Pure! Genuine! Maybe one day we will get to this point! Just maybe! But if not, at least let’s strive to.
Final thought: What is the condition of your heart towards people? You can’t say you love God and not love people. For God is love and He loves all people!
1 Corinthians 13:13 says: and now remains these three: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is Love.
SO REMEMBER: LOVE IS THE PRINCIPAL THING. LET US LOVE TODAY.
